I am changin my filter every three days and the water alwasy looks clear. How come? I don't change my filter too often. It builds up a nice colony of helpful bacterias that help to remove ammonia and other harmful waste from the fish water. If your filter has a sponge AND a cartridge with carbon inside (seperate parts), you can take out the sponge and rinse/squeeze/squish it around in the DIRTY water you take out of the tank to remove debris every few weeks. Don't do it in clean water because the chlorine will kill those nice helpful bacterias.
Some really experienced fish people have told me they don't even use carbon at all in their tanks. I probably don't replace the carbon except for twice a year, but I rinse out my sponge whenever it needs it. One of my filters also has some ceramic(?) medium that you don't replace as well.
